Pizzeria Delfina @ 18th St, San Francisco

One of our favorite restaurants in SF is Delfina; it serves super tasty food in an intimate, local and unpretentious environment that makes going there a delight (and highly addictive - I'm often caught in the midst of dreaming about their pasta dishes during a high carb withdrawal....)

Well, right next door is their casual spot; Pizzeria Delfina- a very small venue but with a menu that feel like you've arrived in Milan for a quick bite at a uber chic cafe.

The interior: simple and to the point, since it's so small, everything is used to it's utmost efficiency-delivery boxes become decoration, shelves lined with  plates and prepared items on display at the counter-it's modern minimalism with character and whimsey.

Pizza was the easy choice at this establishment, but once we looked at the menu, it got infinitely harder; there were a lot of items that could have easily been devoured, and had I not had the reigns pulled in by Rick, it could have gone gluttonous real fast...

Minamoto Kitchoan @ Market St, San Francisco

For those of you who have lived in a cave/hovel/Uni-Bomber bunker, Mochi is a popular Japanese Confection consisting of sweetened rice that has been pounded into a sticky gooey consistency, conventionally filled with a sweetened bean paste called Azuki. It's definitely not your conventional sweet dessert, but texturally it's divine.

Nowadays, Mochi is pretty much everywhere, one iteration that is very popular is the Mochi Ice Cream (ice cream filled Mochi in various flavors) which is popular in Japanese restaurants.

However, for the real thing, you have to go and buy from an authentic Japanese confection shop; so when we're in SF, Minamoto Kitchoan is a destination must that should not be missed...

Little Delhi @ Eddy St, San Francisco

What we LOVE about SF:  the public transit, Union Square, the Bay, and the FOOD!!!  And not just the nice, high end fancy pants places, the places that are humble, down to earth and delicious.  SF has a plethora of awesomely divvy joints that on the outside, might seem somewhat unsavory, but deliver quality dishes that offer no pretentiousness...

Staying close to Union Square, we pass by this one restaurant all the time without giving it much serious thought.  BUt seeing that we were dying for ethnic food, our little iPhones gave us some suggestions, and told us to stop by LIttle Delhi.

Kamdesh Afgan Kabab House @ 14th St. Oakland

I don't know about you, but I fell in love with Afgani cuisine the moment my lips touched the wonderful spiced dishes with an unforgettable subtle sweetness. my first experience was in Baltimore at the Helmand; a relatively small, quant restaurant that served some of the most amazing dishes ever eaten.  It's there that I found my fondness for the cuisine that I describe as soft; food that comforts you, with no intention to assault your senses.

Bi-Rite Creamery @ 18th St, San Francisco

If there was any a store that I wish I lived on the same street, it would be this one: Bi-Rite Creamery.  It always has lines out the door, with people waiting with excitement and anticipation, wondering what flavors they are going to get, knowing that they will pick the ones they always have come in for...

Located in Mission Dolores, it's adjacent to Dolores Park, which makes it the perfect stop after a hot day laying out on the grass (I also love going to Bi-Rite Market across the street and getting a sandwich and some side salads for a Picnic in the park!)

The whole street that it's located on is a veritable food fest, you have Delfina and Pizzeria Delfina where you can get some of the best Italian food in the city, Tartine Bakery and the Dolores Park Cafe-all good food..

Umami Burger SF @ Union Street, San Francisco

I know, I know, there's a ton of places to go in SF without having to go to the same chain that we go to in LA, it's sad...But the Umami Burger is an addictive temptress and when there's the possibility of a local dealer for Burger crack...well at least it's not like we're going to an abandoned warehouse or anything....

Quite the opposite, Umami SF is located in the yuppie-esque neighborhood of Cow Hollow, where ergonomic baby strollers run amuck, the streets riddled with haute furniture stores cum massive price tags (delivery not included) and a bevy of bars where the drinks are abnormally flavored and sickeningly sweet, fecund with saccharin....

Out The Door @ Bush St, San Francisco

Sticky Rice wrapped in Lotus Leaf

I don't know why it is, but whenever we're in SF, we end up eating mostly Asian food; whether it's Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese or Thai, (and Indian on a special occasion) it's the go-to cuisine.  Maybe because it's so much more prevalent there, or I just go crazy as soon as I'm transplanted back into an urban setting...

It was heartbreaking when the Westfield location closed down...yes, it was inside a mall...yes it was located adjacent to the Food Court...yes it's soooo touristy....BUT WE DIDN'T CARE!!! It was totally convenient for us, (The Ferry Terminal is cool, but sometimes, you don't want to trek all the way to The Slanted Door near the whipping winds and cold damp waterfront...) the environment is always casual and easy going...and you can go to Bearded Papas out in the Food Court for a Cream Puff afterwards! It's the simple things that are the best...
